(ALL SERIES / TRIMS)
Produced from 1957 to 1959
After the success of the 750 Zagato Coupé, Abarth decided to create a smaller version of the car, with a 500cc engine, to showcase at the 1957 Turin Motor Show. The car was produced in limited numbers for both road and racing use.
Abarth made significant changes to the two-cylinder engine, such as adding twin Weber 26IMBs and a new cylinder head with a 8.7:1 compression ratio, which increased the power to 23 bhp at 5000 rpm.
The body, designed by Zagato, was similar to the 750 GT, but without the iconic double-bubble roof. The smaller engine didn’t require the large air scoops on the engine lid, but it still featured the unique rear-quarter windows.
While it didn’t have the same impact as the 750 GT, the 500 did achieve success in racing, with Ovidio Cappelli winning the 500cc Italian Grand Touring championship in one of these small racers.
